In part one of this two-part blog series, we looked at some of the simple variables that differentiate gas appliances from electric ones. There are several basic differences here, and knowing about them is important if you’re choosing between one or the other for one or more appliance needs in your home or building.
At All Pro Appliance Service, we’re happy to offer appliance repair services to numerous appliance brands and types for our Salt Lake City clients, including both gas and electric appliances. What are some other differences between gas and electric appliances to consider if you’re replacing any appliance in your home? Here are several.
Overall Operating Costs
This is one area where a clear winner is tough to determine, and may vary from area to area — though if we had to pick, gas probably ekes this one out by a hair. That’s because natural gas is likely a bit less expensive for appliance operation than electricity in most parts of the country, though the difference is often slim.
Of course, if your home or building doesn’t have access to natural gas lines, then electric appliances are obviously the way to go. And if you’re considering a switch from one type of power source to another for any reason, be sure to factor in the cost of installation and other conversion-related factors.
General Efficiency
Efficiency is naturally a very important consideration with any appliance, and both gas and electric appliances have come a long way in recent years. However, if we’re talking about newer models of each type of appliance, chances are good that the gas version will be more efficient than the electric one.
That said, there are certain appliances where this isn’t necessarily the case. For example, electric clothes dryers are often more efficient than gas models, and some people feel that electric ovens cook food more evenly.
Environmental Impact
As with efficiency, both gas and electric appliances have become much more environmentally friendly in recent years. However, if you’re looking to minimize your ecological footprint as much as possible, then electric appliances are probably the way to go. That’s because the process of generating electricity — though not perfect — is generally less harmful to the environment than the natural gas drilling, extraction, and refinement process.
So, there you have it! Those are just a few key considerations to keep in mind if you’re weighing your options between gas and electric appliances. As always, the team at All Pro Appliance Service is here to help with all of your appliance repair needs in the Salt Lake City area — so don’t hesitate to give us a call!
