There are a few common things that tend to happen over time in the area of your oven, range and stovetop within the kitchen, and one of the most frequent is a buildup of grease. Cleaning grease deposits periodically is important for a few reasons, from maintaining aesthetics to keeping your appliances in tip-top shape to maximize their lifespan.
At All Pro Appliance Service, we’re happy to offer oven repairs and many related solutions for Utah clients – but we also help clients understand some of the risks that often lead to appliance damage or wear-and-tear in the first place. Grease is definitely on this list, and keeping it away from these appliances will often benefit them in multiple ways. This two-part blog series will go over some basics on why grease is a threat to ovens, ranges and related areas, plus some simple steps on how to remove it to avoid these risks.
Why Grease is a Risk on Ovens, Ranges and Stovetops
Firstly, grease buildup can lead to a visible lack of aesthetics in the kitchen if it’s allowed to accumulate too much. This is especially true on older ovens and ranges, where greasy deposits tend to discolor surfaces with black or yellowish stains.
However, there are also more serious risks that come from grease buildups on these appliances. Grease can often collect in crevices or tight spots where regular washing may not reach, and these areas can become a fire hazard over time – especially if your oven is used to bake something with high fat content. Additionally, the buildup of grease on the exterior of your oven can also lead to degraded temperature control within the appliance itself, leading to less efficient baking and cooking.
Luckily, it’s simple enough to remove grease before it gets to this level. Our subsequent sections will go over the basic steps for doing this.
Remove Dry Debris
Before you get to wet-cleaning, you’ll want to remove any dry debris that may be lingering on your oven or range. Using a soft brush such as an old toothbrush, gently scrub down the exterior of the appliance and look within crevices or tight spots for any stubborn residue. When done properly, this should often remove most of the grease before you even get to the next steps.
Apply Baking Soda Cleaning Solution
In most cases, the simplest solution for cleaning grease involves one part baking soda and three parts warm water. Mixing these together will produce a solution you can apply with a soft sponge; from here, you add a little more baking soda to make this an even thicker paste, then apply this to any particularly tough grease spots. After a few minutes, start wiping away the cleaning paste with your soft cloth or sponge – and if you’ve done everything correctly, this should remove most of the grease in the process.
In our next entry to this series, we’ll go over some additional steps to take if these steps don’t do the trick – plus how often you should be cleaning grease from these areas.
