Common Culprits in Electric Stove Problems

turning on an electric stove
|

For anyone who cooks somewhat regularly, whether it’s daily or just a few times per week, maintaining the quality and working order of an electric stove will be an important theme. Stoves that are in disrepair will not provide the right quantities of heat, and may also strain the system to the point where further damage occurs if the current issue is not addressed.

At All Pro Appliance Service, we’re here to offer several areas of stove repair among our broad appliance repair services, including solutions for electric stove tops. In many cases, our clients play a role in helping us identify the issue taking place — and there may even be some limited situations where you can perform a DIY fix on your electric stove without ever needing our team. Here’s a primer on identifying electric stove issues, plus how to address them.

Burner Socket

If you’ve found that your stove is only working intermittently, or heats at irregular patterns, this could be an issue with the burner socket. The burner socket is a small, circular metal bracket that holds the burner in place while also providing power to the burner when you push the switch.

And when this part is faulty, it may stop working entirely — or you might notice a clicking sound occurring when you turn on a particular burner. In either case, be sure to contact one of our pros for stove repair.

Burner Issues

In other cases, the problem will be with the burner itself. Have you found that certain electric cooktop coil burners aren’t even heating at all when you turn the system on, for instance? This is a common sign of a burner concern — your first step should actually be to simply unplug your stove for a few minutes. This is because the burners are usually plugged into an electrical outlet, with power flowing through them when you turn on the relevant switch.

If unplugging and re-plugging doesn’t work, it may be time to call in our team for professional repairs. And if you’re being forced to unplug your stove multiple times per week for this same problem, it’s also possible your stove simply needs to be replaced.

Switch Problems

Finally, if your burner is barely heating — or, on the flip side, is staying on high heat no matter how much you lower the temperature — this is likely a problem with the infinite switch, which is attached to the knob for a given burner or set of burners.

To address this malfunction, you’ll have to disable the switch by removing the knob from it – and then look at the underside for a small metal tab. This tab can actually be pried up with a flat head screwdriver, which will expose a small wire that is connected to one side of the switch. You can then wrap this wire around the opposite side of the metal tab to keep the switch fully disabled. If you’re uncomfortable with any part of this process, however, our stove repair professionals are happy to perform it for you.
