There are a few drains in your home that might have issues from time to time, and one that deserves particular attention in many cases is the garbage disposal drain. If you’ve noticed that no water is draining from the side of your sink that contains the garbage disposal, you could be dealing with a clogged drain in this area.

We’ve assisted numerous clients with basic clog removal and prevention for their garbage disposal, plus offer a one-year full warranty on all parts and labor for our services. In this two-part blog series, we’ll dig into garbage disposal drain clogs – how do you prevent them from happening, and what are some quick fixes if a minor clog is in place? And if the clog is more serious, what then? Let’s get into it.
Disposal Drain Clog Prevention
First and foremost, it’s important for any homeowner to understand a basic reality about garbage disposal drain clogs: They are virtually 100% preventable. Nearly every single such clog that may form is due to behaviors or drain uses that are not proper, and correcting these will limit your risk of this issue to begin with. Some general tips:
- Avoid improper items: While the garbage disposal is a powerful item that is meant to grind up items, there are several that should not be pushed down their drains. These include coffee grounds or egg shells (will create small debris particles that will stick to grease and create clogs), potato peels (their fibrous nature often clogs the drain) or banana peels, and more. A good rule is that anytime you have larger or solid food items left over, they should be thrown in the trash rather than down the garbage disposal.
- Use enough water: Another major cause of garbage disposal clogs is when owners attempt to grind up items without enough water present. As most are well aware, the disposal requires running water to operate – if it’s not present, the ground-up debris will build up within your drain pipes and create clogs.
Quick Fixes
In many cases, minor drain clogs in the garbage disposal can be remedied using simple, fast fixes. For starters, get your sink’s hot water supply running as powerfully as you can for at least 30 seconds on the same side of the sink as the disposal, then turn the disposal on – the combination of heat and pressure may break up the clog.
If this doesn’t work, it’s time to find your plunger. Push it down slowly into the drain, then pull it up quickly to release the pressure. If the clog is in the disposal drainpipe and not further downstream, this should clear the clog. If neither of these steps work, proceed to our next section in part two.
